Targa Florio Route, Italy
780 km / 485 miles – 13 to 14 hours – Italy
Not the official route, but most of the roads are in there. Very special part is volcano Etna!
Palermo – San Giuseppe Jato – Corleone – Prizzi – Lercara Friddi – Vallelunga Pratameno – Marianopoli – Santa Caterina Villarmosa – Enna – Pergusa – Piazza Armerina – Caltagirone – Ragusa – Modica – Noto – Syracuse – Catania – Belpasso – Volcano Etna – Randazzo – Santo Stefano di Camastra – Finale – Cefalu – Palermo
The route is based on the Targa Florio Rally Route of 2011. But because a lot of the places from the rally are normally not drivable, this route is altered. All the very nice bits are in it though. Especially the Volcano Etna is breathtaking!
The Targa Florio was an open road endurance race in the mountains of Sicily, near Palermo. Make sure to visit the Targa Florio Museum (click for route) to see how this race was held in its days… If you know how crappy the roads were back then, you get a lot of respect for those racers!
